Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
