Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police state they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found many other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the substance was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
City officials announced they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the community for tips.
An important official stated the vandalism left him without words and required to be solved quickly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
