EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
