The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.
This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a document approving the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Background on Conviction
The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
